We did EC with L and I found it very satisfying too. And as you say practically helpful; especially with poos. A wet nappy is a lot easier to change than a dirty one!
You may already know this, but in general "just out of the sling" is a good time to try, btw, as is "just woken up". As L got a bit older he was definitely inclined (not 100% of the time or anything, but at least sometimes) to hold it and wait rather than go in his nappy. He never used the sign for 'potty' but he did use 'more' (which at around 12 mths was his general sign for I Want A Thing) to request.
